U.S. Rep. John Mica
Minority Leader, U.S. House Transportation Committee
U.S. Rep. John Mica, minority party leader of the federal House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, says he’s secured more than $300 million to fund the Central Florida commuter-rail project. However, Mica produces no documentation to support his claim.
Meanwhile, the Federal Transit Administration says there is no money in the budget for the Central Florida rail project. It’s among the applicants, but it has no guarantee of funding. Mica, a Republican from Winter Park, warns that unless Orlando's plan gets rolling again, other Florida cities can kiss goodbye any hope of winning federal money for commuter rail elsewhere.
In other words, Mica wants lawmakers to blindly sign on to a deal that overspends state tax dollars - or else!
Someone should clue Mica in on what’s happened in Washington. His party lost confidence by spending at all costs.
It’s true that Mica helped secure $22.5 million in federal funding for Central Florida Commuter Rail. The grant was written in such a way that the only qualified bidder was a troubled company – Colorado Railcar – that recently went out of business. Of the five self-propelled railroad cars ordered for the yet-to-be-approved Central Florida system, only two were delivered. They are on loan to Tri-Rail in South Florida.
