Who Will Call Out J.D.'s Conflicts?

The story archive of Lakeland Ledger reporter Joe Follick suggests Sen. J.D. Alexander can do no wrong.

In his latest piece, Follick characterizes Alexander as the grand defender of the public purse, valiantly crusading against those who would seek personal gain, including free cell-phone calls.

If J.D. were truly looking out for taxpayers, he'd stand against the giveaways in the $2.6 billion CSX deal. But J.D. stands to personally benefit from the CSX deal, a fact Follick has yet to note.

Consider, Alexander's company (Atlantic Blue) recently purchased a refrigeration-and-warehouse company (Phoenix Industries) that is a Preferred Provider of CSX. That means that if the state builds CSX a railyard in Winter Haven, taxpayers will pay to help grow J.D.'s business.

Secondly, once all those big trucks flood area roads - 1,500 a day are expected to come and go from the railyard - J.D. can make a stronger case to build a "Heartland Parkway" through land he owns.

Alexander's conflicts deserve to be called out.

Can Follick be counted on to tell both sides of the story?

We'll keep you posted.

#1 Tampa Senator bashes Lakeland

Submitted by visitor (not verified) on Wed, 03/11/2009 - 13:08.
During a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee today, Tampa State Senator Mike Fasano called a proposal to reroute freight traffic around Lakeland "way out of bounds". Proponents of Orlando's proposed commuter rail system, SunRail, had added the language after Lakeland officials and State Senator Paula Dockery voiced concerns over a possible addition to freight traffic through downtown Lakeland. Although the bill cleared the Judiciary Committee on a 6-3 vote, Fasano said, "You're going to have members in both chambers saying 'if we're doing it for Lakeland, then we ought to do it for this district and that district." The bill's next stop is Fasano's Transportation and Economic Development Appropriations Committee. The Tampa Republican said the bill would have to be changed there to keep advancing. His comments set up a possible clash with Ms. Dockery who strongly supports rerouting freight traffic around Lakeland. State Senator Lee Constantine of Altamonte Springs is the bill's sponsor. He said,"We'll just go back to the drawing board and try to find something that makes them all comfortable."

#2 Second Reply on No Trucks

Submitted by ProCitizen Media on Wed, 03/11/2009 - 11:08.

For those who think this project is about relieving congestion in Central Florida, remember two things:

1. It will take only 3,600 cars off Interstate 4, which is why the feds rate the project LOW.

2. It will add 1,500 big trucks a day to the roads around Winter Haven, including I-4. See attachment here: http://www.wrongtrack4florida.com/documents/Total_Daily_Trucks_1573.pdf

Sound like a good way to spend $2.6 billion?

Atlantic Blue bought Phoenix Industries in January 2008, hardly "a long time ago."

For proof, check out this link: http://www.atlanticblue.us/downloads/PhoenixRelease.pdf

Here's the first few sentences of what it says:

Atlanticblue Group Completes Purchase of Phoenix Industries
Winter Haven distribution facility complements diverse
agriculture and real estate management company’s portfolio.
Lake Wales, Florida – January 2, 2008 – Atlanticblue Group, Inc., a real estate management, acquisition,
land development and agricultural organization based in Lake Wales, is pleased to announce the acquisition of
Phoenix Industries LLP. Phoenix Industries operates a multi-temperature food grade storage and distribution company based in nearby Winter Haven.

Now, check out this site for Phoenix: http://www.phoenixfl.com/
Did you happen to notice the CSX logo at the bottom?

If it's just two old friends making a business deal, what's there to scrutinize?

#7 stick to the big picture

Submitted by visitor (not verified) on Wed, 03/11/2009 - 10:56.
Rather than waste time geting bogged down arguing about the small stuff like traffic lights and comparisons to other cities' light rail operations, how about focusing on the bigger picture here? The 800-pound gorilla in the room few people seem to be aknowledging is that this deal is a multi-billion dollar piece of corporate welfare for a Fortune 500 company with record profits(already) at a time when the State of Florida(and it's legislature) is trying to cut costs in this era of economic meltdown. How can anyone, no matter which side of the issue you're on, argue this is the best, or even a prudent, use of taxpayer $$$$ It was a bad deal when Jeb Bush and his cronies crafted it in secret. It's still a bad deal now. What's changed? The Plan as laid out by DOT won't tackle Orlando's traffic congestion problem; doesn't go to the major attractions in the area; and keeps the taxpayers on the hook for repairs, improvements and worst of all, the inevitable accidents sure to follow. Other than that, "How was the play, Mrs Lincoln?" The obvious confilicts of interest among the key politicians behind this boondoggle only compound the problem. Scrap this deal, go back to the drawing board and come up with a plan that's doesn't leave the taxpayer on the hook for a corporation's bad behavior.

#8 The truth

Record profits? CSX revenue in the 4th quarter was down 32%. The truth on this website is like oil and water. This deal was not crafted in secret. The Sunshine Law was not broken. No laws were broken. The big guerilla here is the number of jobs that construction of the Winter Haven railyard and SunRail will bring, not to mention the jobs the adjacent business park in Winter Haven will bring.

#9 The Truth?

"This deal was not crafted in secret." Where have you been for the last two years? It was clearly estabilished in last year's legislative session that CSX and FDOT signed a secrecy agreement not to discuss any of the details of this deal for the entire time it was being crafted; mostly by CSX attorneys it would appear! That fact went unrebutted by FDOT General Counsel Yarbrough, FDOT Secretary Kopelousos, FDOT Asssitant Secretary Thiboult, or any other person that participated in this back-room, SECRET deal. Read the record, it's there in the Committee testimony. Give me a break. If anyone believes this is a "good deal" for any citizen of the State of Florida, I have some beachfront property I would like to sell them on Lake Okeechobee.

#10 No trucks

Submitted by visitor (not verified) on Wed, 03/11/2009 - 10:30.
If 1500 trucks a day will come and go from the railyard each day, how come there will be no traffic light at the only entrance to the railyard? And, by the way, the sale of Phoenix was a long time ago, not recently. It was also a sale between two, old, well-known citrus families, the Griffin family and the Adams family. CSX had nothing to do without it. Could have sworn this sight was supposed to be a public education campaign. You continue to amaze with how misleading you can be.
